  1. banter

Banter is the touching upon some fault, weakness, or fancied secret of another in a way half to pique and half to please; badinage is delicate, refined banter. Raillery has more sharpness, but is usually good-humored and well meant. Irony, the saying one thing that the reverse may be understood, may be either mild or bitter. All the other words have a hostile intent. Ridicule makes a person or thing the subject of contemptuous merriment; derision seeks to make the object derided seem utterly despicable — to laugh it to scorn. Chaff is the coarse witticism of the streets, perhaps merry, oftener malicious; jeering is loud, rude ridicule, as of a hostile crowd or mob. Mockery is more studied, and may include mimicry and personal violence, as well as scornful speech. A satire is a formal composition; a sarcasm may be an impromptu sentence. The satire shows up follies to keep people from them; the sarcasm hits them because they are foolish, without inquiring whether it will do good or harm; the satire is plainly uttered; the sarcasm is covert.

How to use banter in a sentence?

  1. David Sabatini:

Was my lab kind of freewheeling and fun? Yes, you know, was the word retarded used sometimes, yes. That there was sort of outright sexism to people, no, and I certainly wouldn’t have tolerated that if that was the case so I do resist certainly a locker room atmosphere – I resist that characterization. Was it light and banter-full and people joked around and made fun of each other sometimes, yes, but in a very mutual kind of way.

  2. John Key:

There's always lots of horsing around and sort of practical jokes and that's all there really was to it, ...I realized she had actually taken offence because it was all in the context of a bit of banter that was going on and so I obviously immediately apologized for that.

  3. Andy Sorkin:

The director, very close to the start of photography, decided that we were missing a sex scene between Alec Baldwin and Nicole Kidman, i went back to the hotel and I wrote like four pages of banter that ended with them falling into bed and Nicole Kidman and Alec Baldwin cut to the next day.

  4. Piara Powar:

There's a strand of male culture you see in the UK, and to some extent other Anglo Saxon societies, prevalent among 20, 30 and even 40-year-olds, which is : you go abroad, you drink a fair amount, you sing songs and engage in banter, and pick on someone who is different to you, there's this pervasive sexism and racism. The idea that' anyone who isn't like us, we're going to sing about them and insult them and it's part of the lad's day out.'.

  5. Justin Bieber:

Banter back and forth online I don't believe solves anything.
