  1. currency

Money is the authorized medium of exchange; coined money is called coin or specie. What are termed in England bank-notes are in the United States commonly called bills; as, a five-dollar bill. The notes of responsible men are readily transferable in commercial circles, but they are not money; as, the stock was sold for $500 in money and the balance in merchantable paper. Cash is specie or money in hand, or paid in hand; as, the cash account; the cash price. In the legal sense, property is not money, and money is not property; for property is that which has inherent value, while money, as such, has but representative value, and may or may not have intrinsic value. Bullion is either gold or silver uncoined, or the coined metal considered without reference to its coinage, but simply as merchandise, when its value as bullion may be very different from its value as money. The word capital is used chiefly of accumulated property or money invested in productive enterprises or available for such investment.

  1. Antonio Costa:

Naturally, I'm referring to the Netherlands, there is at least one country in the euro zone that resists understanding that sharing a common currency implies sharing a common effort.

  2. Jerome Powell:

The idea that deficits don't matter for countries that can borrow in their own currency I think is just wrong. I think that U.S. debt is fairly high as a level of (gross domestic product) and, much more importantly than that, it's growing faster than GDP, to the extent that people are talking about the Fed - our role is not to provide support for particular policies.

It needs that foreign inflow to cushion its currency during the trade war, if China weaponizes Treasury holdings, that sends a very alarming message to global investors.

  4. Cristian Maggio:

The (central bank) may have been wary of a repeat of an August 2015 situation when the market just collapsed after the PBOC allowed a depreciation of about 2.5 percent in a single day, so the move today is a subtle signal that that's not what's going to happen, and the market seems to have taken this signal - at least on the currency side - as a positive, risk-on move.

  5. George Santayana:

A conception not reducible to the small change of daily experience is like a currency not exchangeable for articles of consumption; it is not a symbol, but a fraud.
