English Synonyms and Antonyms
prohibition
A bar is something that is or may be firmly fixed, ordinarily with intent to prevent entrance or egress; as, the bars of a prison cell; the bars of a wood-lot. A barrier obstructs, but is not necessarily impassable. Barrier is used of objects more extensive than those to which bar is ordinarily applied. A mountain range may be a barrier to exploration; but a mass of sand across the entrance to a harbor is called a bar. Discovered falsehood is a bar to confidence. Barricade has become practically a technical name for an improvised street fortification, and, unless in some way modified, is usually so understood. A parapet is a low or breast-high wall, as about the edge of a roof, terrace, etc., especially, in military use, such a wall for the protection of troops; a rampart is the embankment surrounding a fort, on which the parapet is raised; the word rampart is often used as including the parapet. Bulwark is a general word for any defensive wall or rampart; its only technical use at present is in nautical language, where it signifies the raised side of a ship above the upper deck, topped by the rail. Compare BOUNDARY; IMPEDIMENT.

Lest there be any doubt, we hold that our state constitutions prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment, article I, section 17,5 does not require a unanimous jury recommendation or any jury recommendation before a death sentence can be imposed, the court said. That ruling has placed the fate of those death row inmates navigating the resentencing process into the realm of uncertainty. There is a growing fear among experts that some of those death row inmates will have their death penalties reinstated. An execution chamber used in Florida. (Florida Department of Corrections) The question here now is going to be, What about the people that have already been told they are entitled to a resentencing hearing? can you take that away from them? Can you retroactively pull the rug out and reinsert the death penalty? Brunvand toldFox News that a motion has already been filed to reinstate the death penalty for his client. He thinks thats an injustice. I cannot imagine having been sentenced to death, having received word from the Supreme Court that the scheme is unconstitutional and youre going to get a new trial, to have lawyers start preparing for trial and then all of the sudden face the prospect that Oh, we might just send you back to death row. I cant imagine.
The ultimate lesson to prohibition is two-fold. Watch out for solutions that end up worse than the problems they set out to solve, and remember the Constitution is no place for experiments, noble or otherwise.” – D. Duane Steward, PhD
New York has an explicit constitutional prohibition on partisan gerrymandering. The Democrats violated that prohibition. They did it knowingly, they did it willingly, they did it joyfully. And the court today struck them down, this is a victory for the people of the state, and it's a victory for competitive and fair elections in New York state.
The Depression came on and there was no more tax revenue for the federal government, people were saying, 'Where are we going to get the money to keep the lights on?' The primary tax revenue before Prohibition was alcohol.
