How to use protested in a sentence?
When you follow the mob, you become part of the mob. I saw this during protests in Charlotte, where people rightfully protested for Black Lives Matter. But then they didn't stop others, people from breaking the windows. They didn't defend the police, and the exact same thing happened yesterday in Washington DC. People who had a right to protest did not protest the violence and the breaking of laws, of taking over a hallowed institutional building. It's inexcusable.
Unfortunately, the discourse from some in the community did not remain civil and reportedly included threats of physical violence. We had to make a very tough call, our cancellation of the Pride Prom does not mean that we agree with -- or are bowing to pressure from -- those who protested the event.
In the past, when Indian agricultural workers have protested for fair prices and working conditions, Union Seminary has responded with violent crackdowns that include documented torture, human rights abuses, and extrajudicial killings, it is critical that, in this moment of peaceful protest, we keep our eyes trained on India's response, and ensure that they do not again resort to repressive tactics as a way to thwart free speech and protest.
I'm hopeful because of the hundreds of thousands of people who have peacefully protested, and who are continuing to raise the issue.
